Hardy Amies

Known as 'The man who dressed the Queen', Hardy Amies' clothes are elegant yet understated. His design motto was, "The best dressed women wear clothes which would not look absurd in the country," which holds true in his strict focus on suits, coats and evening wear. Amies showed his first collection of tweed suits with rounded shoulders and padded hips in 1946 and became an instant success. By 1950 he opened a boutique on Savile Row and caught the attention of Queen Elizabeth, whom he proceeded to dress for the next 40 years. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of his career was when he stepped outside of his suspected design comfort zone and created the costumes for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
