Multi Colour Artist Series No.1 Yasumasa Morimura Top
A convergence of fashion and fine art, this Pleats Please Issey Miyake top from the Guest Artist Series No. 1 features a print by acclaimed Japanese artist Yasumasa Morimura. Known for his subversive self-portraits, Morimura inserts himself, often in drag, into iconic works of Western art, reconfiguring them to challenge ideas of identity, gender, race, and cultural power. His work is an homage and critique, interrogating the dominance of Eurocentric aesthetics through a Japanese lens. Here, his reinterpretation of Venus, originally inspired by Diego Velázquez’s Rokeby Venus, is digitally printed across Miyake’s signature pleated fabric and transforms Morimura’s provocative self-portrait into wearable art. The elongated silhouette and asymmetric print placement create visual tension, while the pleats offer structure and stretch. Morimura’s collaboration with Miyake in 1996 marked the first installment of the Guest Artist Series, which aimed to fuse fine art with garment design. An iconic intersection of identity, art history and innovation, this top is a rare and highly collectable. Very good vintage condition with small signs of wear throughout. Made in Japan. ONE SIZE fits like an S/M.
