American born fashion designer, James Galanos started his career in 1944 as an assistant to Jean Louis. After moving from New York to California in 1951 he showed his first ready-to-wear collection in Los Angeles and quickly gained a reputation for his clean designs and creative cuts. Throughout his career his cocktail and evening wear were highly coveted and he was praised for his use of chiffon, printed silks, velvet, brocade and lace. Galanos was the first to design suits with the iconic horseshoe neckline, he created slimline classically draped gowns with billowing sleeves and was known for his low backed wool crepe dresses.
