Oscar De La Renta

One of the most famous fashion designers, Oscar de la Renta apprenticed at the Balenciaga and Lanvin fashion houses before moving to New York to design for Elizabeth Arden. He became head designer at Jane Derby in 1965 and by 1969 he had bought the company and renamed it after himself. His reputation for extravagant, opulent, romantic yet tasteful clothes quickly became his calling card and he attracted the patronage of First Ladies, socialites and movie stars. His ready-to-wear and couture collections feature vibrant dresses, coats, suits and daywear but he is best known for his cocktail and eveningwear, many of which are elaborately trimmed with embroidery, frills and ruffles. Mr. de la Renta's passing in 2014 has made his clothing even more covetable.
